Ed Hughes MPS, LICDC

Ed Hughes was born in Virginia, but raised in Portsmouth, Ohio. He received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Ohio University in 1975 and his master’s in Public Service Counseling from Western Kentucky University in 1979. Prior to becoming Executive Director of The Counseling Center in 1989 he served as Aftercare Coordinator and Associate Director of the Shawnee Mental Health Center for four years and Executive Director of the Scioto County Children Services Board for six years. In 1989 The Counseling Center was a small outpatient program that has since grown into a multi-county, comprehensive addiction treatment program with over 150 staff, serving clients from a tri-state area, offering prevention, outpatient, residential, and transitional services. Ed has served as a member of the Ohio Department of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Service’s Advisory Council and the Ohio Juvenile Justice Advisory Board by appointment of two Ohio governors. For the past five years Ed has facilitated the Loved Ones Group in Portsmouth, a free, weekly gathering of families and friends of addicted loved ones. He writes a monthly newspaper column, and is available for workshops and speaking engagements. A strong believer in the benefits of nutrition and exercise Ed is a distance runner and conducts trainings on the connection between nutrition, exercise and their relationship to addiction recovery. Ed enjoys the company of his three adult children, Angela, Joshua, and Lindi, and seven grandchildren. Ed resides in southern Ohio with his wife, Kendra, a dietician.

 

Ron Turner MD, CDCA

Ron Turner grew up in a Chicago suburb and graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. He completed medical school at the University of Illinois, interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and finished his orthopedic surgery training at the State University of New York at Buffalo. During his private practice of orthopedics in Portsmouth, Ohio, he wrote a weekly sportsmedicine newspaper column and became a certified SCUBA diver and instrument-rated private pilot. When he retired, he joined the Board of Directors of The Counseling Center, Inc., and taught biology and composition at Shawnee State University. He currently teaches anatomy and physiology for the Department of Surgical Technology at the Scioto County Career Technical Center. He is the author of several scientific publications and editor of As Told: The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. After giving up his sailboat (“a hole in the water into which you throw money”), Ron became certified as a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant and now does assessments at The Counseling Center. He visits with his five far-flung children and their children whenever possible. He resides with his wife Jean, a surgical technologist, in southern Ohio.
